SUMMARY:🪞⚡ Emerson’s Self-Reliance - what does it mean to be yoursel
 f
DESCRIPTION:Short essay discussion - read beforehand.\n\nWhat this is\n\nTh
is revives the cancelled September 27 Emerson event. Everyone says “be y
ourself” now. Usually they mean: be yourself in a way that photographs w
ell\, does not cost you anything\, and still gets approved by the room. Em
erson is more annoying than that. Self-Reliance is about self-trust\, conf
ormity\, integrity\, the fear of being misunderstood\, and the strange pre
ssure to become more acceptable than honest.\n\nA few questions for the ro
om\n\n• “When does independence become integrity\, and when does it be
come selfishness?”\n• “What does it actually cost to be misunderstoo
d?”\n• “How much of your personality is conviction\, and how much is
adaptation?”\n\nReading\n\nRead Self-Reliance only. Original text: Open
