About this event

Book club discussion - read Book V only beforehand. The end of The Lord of the Rings is too big to rush. So we’re splitting *The Return of the King* and giving its first half the room it deserves.

Read Book V only.

Not Book VI. Not the full novel. Book V is where the war comes forward: Minas Tirith, Rohan, Denethor, Théoden, Éowyn, Merry, Pippin, Faramir, Aragorn, and the brutal pressure of people trying to act with courage before they know whether anything can still be saved. This is a discussion about fear, leadership, despair, sacrifice, hidden courage, and what people become when history finally arrives at their door. Please avoid Book VI spoilers. We’re keeping this discussion firmly inside Book V.

A few questions already sitting in my head

  • What kind of courage does Book V respect most?
  • Is Aragorn becoming king because he wants power, or because the moment demands something from him?
  • What does Denethor understand correctly, and where does despair corrupt him?
  • Why does Éowyn’s arc still hit so hard?
  • What do Merry and Pippin show us that the great warriors cannot?
  • Is hope in this section noble, irrational, necessary, or all three?
  • What does Tolkien think leadership costs?
  • Which character feels most human under pressure?

How the morning will go

Come having read Book V before the meetup. We’ll start with one question: “Who surprised you most in this section?” Then we’ll stay close to Book V: the siege, the riders, the city, the despair, the acts of courage, and the way Tolkien makes war feel both mythic and deeply personal. This is a book-club discussion. No screening, no movie-discussion detour, and no trivia contest.

Reading

J.R.R. Tolkien - *The Return of the King* Read Book V only before the meetup. Any edition is fine. Please stop at the end of Book V. We’ll save Book VI and the actual ending of the story for later.

Weekend RSVP policy

Our weekend events regularly have waitlists of 20 or more people. If you can no longer attend, please update your RSVP by Thursday evening. This gives someone on the waitlist enough time to make plans and take the available spot. Members who remain marked as attending and miss two events without cancelling may be removed from the group. Emergencies happen; if something unavoidable comes up, please message the organizer. Keeping your RSVP accurate helps limited seats go to people who can actually attend.
