Documentary movie discussion - watch beforehand. Open spoilers.
Short summary
Some documentaries look small until they start rearranging the room. *Minding the Gap* begins with skateboarding, friendship, youth, and the feeling of trying to outrun the place that raised you. Then it becomes something much harder to shake. A film about boys becoming men without enough language for fear, anger, tenderness, family damage, or the things they inherited before they knew they were carrying them. That is why this one deserves a room. Not because it has an easy message. Not because it turns pain into inspiration. Not because everyone gets healed neatly before the credits. A real conversation about friendship, fathers and sons, masculinity, class, domestic violence, escape, memory, and what it costs to finally look at the stories you used to survive. We are watching beforehand. There is no screening at the event. Open spoilers are fine.
A few questions already sitting in my head
- What did skateboarding give them that home did not?
- When does friendship become survival?
- What do boys learn to hide before they even know they are hiding it?
- Does the camera help people tell the truth, or does it change the truth being told?
- How does the film handle violence without making it feel cheap or simple?
- What does growing up mean when the adults around you were damaged too?
- Which moment felt most honest, and which one was hardest to watch?
- Can you really leave a place if it shaped the way you understand love, anger, and fear?
How the afternoon will go
Come having watched *Minding the Gap* beforehand. We'll start with one question: "What moment made the film stop feeling like a skateboarding documentary?" Then we'll stay close to the film: friendship, family, violence, escape, growing up, masculinity, the camera, and why some people need movement before they can tell the truth. Not trauma tourism. Not documentary prestige voice. Not everyone pretending they are emotionally above the film. A real discussion about what people carry, what they repeat, and what it takes to finally see it clearly.

When and where
📅 Sunday, September 6, 2026 🕒 3:00 PM-5:00 PM PDT 📍 Vancouver Central Library 9th floor, left of the elevators when you exit. Small room on purpose. This kind of film needs enough quiet around it for people to actually say something real.
Weekend RSVP policy
Our weekend events regularly have waitlists of 20 or more people. If you can no longer attend, please update your RSVP by Thursday evening. This gives someone on the waitlist enough time to make plans and take the available spot. Members who remain marked as attending and miss two events without cancelling may be removed from the group. Emergencies happen; if something unavoidable comes up, please message the organizer. Keeping your RSVP accurate helps limited seats go to people who can actually attend.
