Summary:
Welcome to the second discussion of the general introduction study series: Autism!
"Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with problems with social communication and/or interaction, and occurrences of restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or activities. Autism was previously distinguished from Asperger’s syndrome, but the latest version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) instead uses a broader ‘umbrella’ category of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The condition affects approximately 1 in every 100 children. It is not fully known what causes autism but it is thought to include a mixture of environmental and genetic factors."
In this meetup, we will be discussing two lectures (links below to be listened to prior to meetup) where experts detail some highlights to understanding, recognizing and supporting Autism and Autists.
The first hour of the discussion will focus on what we each gathered from the podcasts and how they apply to our living experience. The second hour - we will open up the discussion into listening to one another and understanding the traits we may personally experience and how they improve and challenge our realities. Through this, we will share and discover methods to accept, manage and regulate neurodivergence with ourselves and others around us!
For those who do not have Autism, you are absolutely welcome to come and learn about it - woo-hoo inclusivity!!
Please ensure to listen to the two lectures below prior to the meetup:
90| Autism: The Big Picture – A Conversation With Sir Simon Baron-Cohen
Open navneuro.com (Podcast is on the page, as well as a downloadable PDF!)
Episode 130: Is This Autism? Understanding Neurodiversity with Neuropsychologist Dr. Donna Henderson
What to bring:
- A pen/pencil, journal or digital device to take notes on.
- Water or drink for hydration as it is two hours.
Note:
The question attached to your attendance is purely for statistical insight of attendees - an answer and having Autism is not necessary to attend:)!
Looking forward to meeting you all soon!!
