About this event

🎮 First Game Design Discussion: Twenty Years, Twenty Lessons

Our first meeting will focus on Mark Rosewater’s GDC talk *Twenty Years, Twenty Lessons*. We’ll discuss what makes players care, how design should respond to player behaviour, and which lessons still hold up today. We’ll begin with 15 minutes of introductions, followed by about an hour of discussion.

A few questions to think about:

  • If players keep using a mechanic “wrong,” should we teach them, or redesign it around their instincts?
  • Is it better for some players to love your game and others to hate it, or for everyone to think it’s merely fine?
  • If the best strategy for winning is boring, has the design failed?
  • When do restrictions breed creativity, and when do they simply make a design worse?

Please watch the talk beforehand 📅 Saturday, September 12 at 8:30 PM PT 📍 The Discord link to join will be shared in the Meetup event chat with attendees.
