About this event

Informal philosophy pub conversation - no required reading.

Short summary

Everyone says education matters. Then you ask what it is actually for and the answers start getting slippery. Is it for knowledge? A job? Citizenship? Character? Status? Freedom? Obedience? A nicer rรฉsumรฉ? A more expensive way to become employable? This Philosophy Pub is an informal pub conversation about what education is supposed to do to a person. Not a lecture. Not a course. Not networking with better vocabulary. Just a table, a real question, and people willing to think out loud without pretending they have solved the school system between sips. The question is simple enough to enter and big enough to get uncomfortable: What is education for?

A few questions already sitting in my head

  • โ€œIs education supposed to make you employable, or make you harder to manipulate?โ€
  • โ€œWhat should a person know even if it never helps them get a job?โ€
  • โ€œDoes school build character, or mostly train obedience?โ€
  • โ€œWhen does education become status decoration?โ€
  • โ€œCan universities still teach wisdom, or mostly credentials?โ€
  • โ€œWhat kind of education actually makes someone freer?โ€
  • โ€œWho benefits when education is treated mainly as career preparation?โ€

How the evening will go

Weโ€™ll meet at Fionn MacCoolโ€™s, settle in, and open with one question: โ€œWhat did your education actually give you that still matters?โ€ Then weโ€™ll let the room work. This will be lightly hosted, not over-managed. No required reading. No expert status needed. No one turning the table into their personal TED Talk. Push back cleanly. Ask better questions. Leave room for people who think before they speak. Thatโ€™s usually where the good part starts.

Food / drinks

Attendees buy their own food or drinks if they order. No pressure either way.
