Short summary
Most people talk about the self like it is one clean thing. I know who I am. That is just me. I’m not that kind of person. I’ve always been this way. Convenient. Also suspicious. This Hidden Brain episode, “Who Are You, Really?”, gives us a good doorway into a much messier question: Are we one stable self, or a collection of different selves that show up depending on memory, mood, relationships, fear, pressure, and context? Because most of us know the feeling. You are one person with your family. Another with friends. Another at work. Another when you’re insecure. Another when you feel powerful. Another when nobody is watching. So which one is real? Maybe all of them. Maybe none of them. Maybe the self is less like a statue and more like a committee that keeps pretending it has one spokesperson. That’s the room I want. Not personality-test talk. Not astrology with better branding. Not everyone announcing their “type” like it explains a human life. A real conversation about identity, memory, contradiction, and whether becoming yourself means discovering one true core or learning how to live with the many versions of you.
A few questions already sitting in my head
- Are you one self, or a group of selves that take turns running the room?
- Which version of you feels most real: the private one, the social one, the wounded one, or the one under pressure?
- Do people change, or do different parts of them just get more space?
- Is consistency a sign of integrity, or just a story we tell because contradiction makes us nervous?
- How much of identity is memory, and how much is performance?
- When someone says ‘that’s not who I am,’ are they telling the truth or protecting an image?
- What part of yourself do other people seem to know before you do?
How the morning will go
Come having listened to the episode beforehand. You do not need to master every section. Focus on the parts that interest you most, or the part that made you argue with the episode in your head. We’ll start with one question: “What is one version of yourself that only appears in certain situations?” Then we’ll stay close to the episode and let the bigger conversation open up: identity, memory, personality, change, self-deception, and the strange feeling of being both familiar and mysterious to yourself. Not therapy. Not forced vulnerability. Not everyone turning the room into a personal brand audit. A grounded conversation about what we mean when we say “me.”

Weekend RSVP policy
Our weekend events regularly have waitlists of 20 or more people. If you can no longer attend, please update your RSVP by Thursday evening. This gives someone on the waitlist enough time to make plans and take the available spot. Members who remain marked as attending and miss two events without cancelling may be removed from the group. Emergencies happen; if something unavoidable comes up, please message the organizer. Keeping your RSVP accurate helps limited seats go to people who can actually attend.
